The City of Scottsdale needed to widen and realign almost four-miles of a major arterial roadway (Pima Road) to become a six-lane roadway that connected to the local Loop 101 freeway. Entellus completed all the concept and design phases of this project, beginning with the Design Concept Report (DCR) phase where we looked at alignment alternatives examining Quality of Life criteria, (noise, traffic circulation, and landscaping/aesthetics) and input from the local community.
With the completion of the DCR phase, our team moved to the design phase of the roadway. The first segment from the Loop 101 to Deer Valley included the realignment portion of the roadway and required extensive public outreach. Major components of the design included a new bridge, storm drains and culverts, and noise walls adjacent to existing development. We also performed extensive GMP verification and negotiations on behalf of the City. Entellus used its licensed contractor on staff to check market pricing of materials and to evaluate the contractor’s crew size and equipment selections. Ultimately this roadway was completed under budget and is a part of the City of Scottsdale’s scenic corridors.
The second road segment, from Deer Valley to Pinnacle Peak Road consisted of widening the existing roadway to a modified cross-section to minimize impacts to adjacent development. Drainage was a major challenge within this corridor and Entellus evaluated options to capture and manage significant off-site flows. Ultimately, a drainage solution which included approximately two-miles of channels and triple barrel 78-inch storm drains was incorporated. Regional trail improvements were designed through the corridor including underpasses of Pima Road and Pinnacle Peak Road.
